Stanley was born on the 24 August 1896 at Smithfield to William Henry Moss and Mary Brooks. William’s father was Matthew Moss who was the original settler. He was born on the 28 December1832 at Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, England and died on the 17 November 1901 aged 69 years old at Smithfield and was buried at Salisbury Cemetery. He arrived in 1849 on the “JOHN WOODHALL ‘. He was a butcher and worked in Salisbury and Smithfield. He married Mary Brooks and had the following children;

George born 13 February 1859 at Salisbury, died in 1859.
Edwin born on the 24 May 1860 at Salisbury.
George born on the 18 March 1862 at Salisbury, died in 1905
Alfred George born on the 25 June 1864 at Salisbury, died in 1945
Samuel born on the 21 August 1866 at Salisbury, died in 1913
Thomas born on the 23 Feb 1869 at Salisbury, died in 1869.
Charles born on the 6 February 1870 at Salisbury, died in 1870.
Martha born on the 24 January 1872 at Salisbury.
Mary Ann born on the 22 July 1874 at Salisbury.
Hubert born on the 24 February 1877 at Salisbury, died in 1919
His son William Henry married Dorothea Benedicta Maria Katrina Nissen and had the following children;
Leonard William was born on the 23 May 1894 at Stepney.
Christina Mary was born on the 13 May 1895 at Smithfield.
Percival Matthew was born on the 13 May 1895 at Smithfield.
Stanley Lancelot was born on the 24 August 1896 at Smithfield.
Clement George was born on the 18 March 1900 at Stepney.
Stanley went to school at St. Andrew’s School at Walkerville, South Australia. He was a labourer with some gardening experience. He enlisted on the 3 April 1915, aged 18 years.
He first served with the 10th Battalion, then to the 4th Division and later to the 13th Machine Gun Company. After training he embarked on the HMAT A61 Kanowna on the 23 June 1915. He arrived in Egypt on the 11 September 1915 and sailed to Gallipoli six days later. At Gallipoli he was charged with being asleep during “stand to”. He was given a punishment of 7 days Fatigue Party No 2. He left Gallipoli for Alexandria, Egypt on the 29 December 1915, and was then transferred to the 50th Battalion at Serapeum and also at Tel-el-Kabir.
On the 18 March 1916 he was transferred to the 13 Machine Gun Company at Tel-el-Kabir as a signaller. He attended a School at Zeitoun, on completion sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles.
Stanley continued fighting until he was killed in action on the 26 September 1917. He died as a result of shrapnel wounds at the 10th Casualty Clearing station. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
He was recommended for the Military Medal on the 4 October 1917. Photo’s of his grave were sent to his family as well as the plaque and scroll.
Stanley received the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
