John enlisted on the 26 July 1915 aged 21 years old. He listed his occupation as a teamster. He was assigned to the 25th Company ASC 3rd Divisional Train as a Driver on the 16 February 1916. John embarked on the 9 June 1916 at Adelaide on the H.M.A.T. A19 “AFRIC”. He was a driver and Lance Corporal by this time. On the 5 September 1917 he was convicted of smoking in a fodder waggon whilst on transport duty and was docked 3 day’s pay.
He was again admitted to hospital on the 23 November 1918 with bronchitis. He was returned to England before he returned to Australia on the “ORONTES.
When John was 28 years old he married Beatrice Mabel Saunders aged 37 years old, widow at Norwood. Beatrice died on the 23 May 1930 aged 42 years old.
John died on the 12 December 1975 aged 79 years old. He was living at Salisbury North at the time of his death and is buried at Enfield Memorial Park.
