Cowled Family of Angle Vale

John and Sarah left their home in Eltham, near Bromley, Kent to settle in the newly established colony of South Australia.  They travelled on the ship Lady Emma, arriving in 1837 with their daughters Eliza Ada Ann (5 years) and Selina (3 years).

On arrival they built their first house from pine and reeds on the banks of the River Torrens.  They farmed land at Islington on sections 393 and 394 before 1840.

On 14^th March 1848, John obtained a land grant of 80 acres, sections 7584 in the Hundred of Munno Para.  On the 26^th September 1851, he obtained by conveyance in fee from W. Maturin, 99 acres sections 4145.  The land is located on the Gawler River.

His three sons, John, Charles and Humphrey David were born at Islington and two younger daughters, Louisa and Emma were born at the Gawler River.

John was one of the original trustees of the Primitive Methodist Church at Carclew.

In 1853, he sold his land to John Major and settled at Hoyle's Plains. He farmed here until he retired in 1868.  His son Charles took up land at Junee in NSW in 1877 and nine years later his elder brother John joined him there.  Humphrey remained in South Australia at Nonowie, south of Whyalla.  Eliza married Thomas Maynard, Selina carried Thomas beck, Louisa Sam Reeves and Emma married John Styles.

 Twenty years ago he left the latter place and took up his abode at Water vale, where he remained until about three months ago, when he came to Port Pirie, Deceased leaves a widow and seven sons and daughters, 57 grandchildren, and 31 great-grand-children.

John died at Port Pirie on Monday, August 13, 1888. He was 89 years of age at the time of his death.  He left 7 children, 57 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
