John Curnow was born c1815 at Mawgan, Cornwall, England. He worked as a labourer when he married Christina Uren aged 23 years old on the 9 July 1839 at Mawgan. His father was Thomas Curnow, a labourer and her father was Richard Uren, a mariner.
In 1861 they were living in Mawgan and had the following children:-
Mary Ann was born in 1840 and died in 1909 aged 69 years old.
William James was born in 1841 and died in 1849 aged 8 years old.
John James was born in 1843 and died in 1902 aged 59 years old.
George as born in 1845 and died in 1873 aged 28 years old, Peachey Belt
Richard was born in 1847 and died in 1889 aged 42 years old.
William was born in 1849 and died in the same year.
Elizabeth was born in 1851 and died in 1925 aged 74 years old.
Avis Thomas was born in 1853 and died in 1922 aged 69 years old.
Nicholas was born in 1855 and died in 1918 aged 63 years old.
Christina was born in 1857 and died in 1931 aged 74 years old.
The family immigrated to South Australia arrived at Glenelg 15 April 1866 on the “Atlanta”. They resided at Salisbury and later Peachey Belt near Penfield
John’s brother, James also immigrated to South Australia in 1857 at Adelaide.
On the 10 March 1868 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, John died aged 53 years old. After John’s death times were hard for the family. Christina was recommended for rations by the council in 1885. Christina died on the 5 May1887 at Woods Siding aged 71 years old.
William was born on the 28 October 1884 at Owen. He married Nellie Maud Daniel on the 15 Feb 1911 at Long Plains. William died on the 27 July 1963 aged 78 years old at Loxton and his wife Nellie died on the 31 Dec 1969 aged 85 years old.
John James Curnow was born on the 1 October 1843. He married Caroline. John James was a ranger to the Mudla Wirra District Council. John James died on the 4 February 1902 aged 59 years old, at Gawler River.
George was born on the 4 Dec 1886 at Dalkey, Gilbert. He married Marion Vida Lawrie. George died on the 30 Sept 1967 aged 81 years old and his wife Marion Vida died on the 19 August 1955.
George was born in 1845 in Cornwall, but died an unfortunate death at the young age of 28. At that time he was living at home. He returned from an outing with friends at the beach, coming home in an intoxicated state. Returning home he heard a girl cry “the puppy is down the well”. He and his sister Mary Ann ran out, George wanting to go down the well to retrieve the puppy. Mary Ann stopped him with great difficulty. He took out his pocket knife and threatened to stab all the family. He fought with them and falling down many times, bleeding from the nose. He stopped the bleeding by plugging his nose, but must have swallowed the blood, dying as a result. At the inquest on the 15 January 1873 it was decided that he died of asphyxia whilst falling about in a state of intoxication.
Avis Curnow was born in 1853 and was a servant to Margaret Turner. In July 1872 Avis accused Mrs Turner of Servant beating. She was found guilty and fined £ two and costs, £ 1.4s in all, or in default one month’s imprisonment. Avis died on the 11 April 1922 aged 69 years old at Kadina.
Nicholas Curnow was born in 1855 and married Annie Jane Rogers on the 21 February 1883 in the Christian Chapel, Dalkey, near Owen. He died on the 3 March 1918 aged 63 years old at Balaklava, South Australia.
Christina Curnow was born in 1857 and married Richard May on the 22 March 1876 at Willaston. Their children were:-
John was born on the 29 Dec 1876 at Templers.
Letitia was born on the 28 Jan1881 at Balaklava. She married John Lindner on the 28 April 1897 at the Bible Christian Church, Erith. She died on the 15 June 1954 aged 73 years old.
Agnes was born on the 29 May 1879 at Gilbert. She married Charles Green on the 28 Feb 1899 at Edith. On the 15 Nov 1902 Agnes married again to James Thomas Lindner at the residence of the Rev. A. P. Burgess of Gawler.
Charles was born on the 2 Feb 1891 at Dalkey, Gilbert.
Florence Ivie was born on the 4 April 1893 at Dalkey, Gilbert.
Ethel Maud was born on the 8 Aug1895 at Balaklava, Gilbert.
Nellie Myrtle was born on the 14 July 1900 at Balaklava, Gilbert. She died on the 31 Jan 1979 aged 79 years old. She is buried in Mallala Cemetery.
