Angle Vale Teacher 1901 - 1905
Ellen was born on the 24 April 1866. Her parents were Charles Louis James DuBois who was born on the 28 May 1842 at Hackney, Middlesex, England and Susannah Maria Bogue who was born on the 15 December 1842 at Dundoon, Scotland. Charles parents were Charles Lewis DuBois the 1st who was born c1818 at Woodford, Essex, England and Helen Johnson who was born in 1821 at St. Georges East, Middlesex, England. Charles Lewis married again to Isabella Wauchope who was born on the 20 April 1856 in South Australia.
Charles Louis married Susannah on the 11 June 1865 at Adelaide. They had the following children:-
Ellen Maud Josephine was born on the 24 April 1866.
Charles Lewis James was born in 1867.
Rose Maria was born in 1869 at Magill. She died in the same year.
Catherine May was born in 1870 at Magill.
Lillian was born in 1872 at Norwood.
Arthur Eugene was born in 1873. He died in the same year.
Eugene Rupert was born in 1875 at Clare.
Frederick William was born in 1877 at Clare.
Ernest John was born in 1879 at Clare.
Violet was born in 1881 at Snowtown.
Herbert was born in 1883 at Barrunga.
Charles Lewis the 1st first married Helen Johnson on the 15 August 1839 at Tower Hamlets, Middlesex. In 1851 they were living in Hackney with his first three children. His occupation was a clerk. At some stage they migrated to South Australia. They lived at North Adelaide, Reedbeds, Norwood and others. They had the following children:

Agnes was born in 1852.
Kate Elizabeth was born in 1854
Helen died on the 30 May 1880 at Norwood aged 59 years old. Charles Lewis re-married to Isabella Wauchope on the 22 October 1883 at All Saints Church, Hindmarsh. They had the following children:-
William Lewis Ledgwick was born in 1884.
Harold Goodenough Wauchope was born in 1885.
Gertrude Isabel was born in 1886.
Bernard Cameron was born in 1887.
Agnes was born in 1889.
Ivy was born in 1891.
Charles Lewis died on the 9 December 1914 at Adelaide aged 96 years old and his wife Isabella died on the 20 November 1906 at Glenelg aged 50 years old.
Charles Louis James married at age 23 years old to Susannah Maria Bogue on the 11 June 1865 in Adelaide. At first they lived at Magill and Norwood. After their sixth child they moved to Clare and then to Snowtown and Barrunga farming.
In 1903 he was farming at Cowell and was a J.P. In 1913 he was living at Charlton near Port Lincoln. He died on the 29 July 1913 at the same place aged 71 years old. Susannah died on the 2 March 1915 at Cowell aged 72 years old.
Ellen was their first child and on the 1 January 1886 she began as a provisional teacher at Clinton Centre (near Kadina) where she received 89% and a comment of ‘Good’ from the inspector. She was at Finniss vale (near Rapid Bay) in 1891 and 1892. Ellen moved to Stockwell (near Nuriootpa) and was there from 1893 to 1900 and received around 89%, class A and “very good” from the inspectors.
She moved to Angle Vale in 1901 and was there until 1905 where she received 86% and a mark of class A and was “Good”. In1905 she moved to Huddleston (near Gladstone). She received Class A and was “Progressive, forceful, effective, good work, thorough, earnest and able” in 1909. In 1911 she moved to Alma South (near Owen) and remained for the remainder of her career. She continued teaching until her retirement in 1930.
On the evening of 15th December 1904, a farewell social was held for Ellen. A musical programme was held after which gifts were exchanged. The Chairman. On behalf of the attendees presented Ellen with a gold brooch and on behalf of the scholars a purse was presented by J. Ashton.
She was made Teacher on the 1 January 1916 and her Efficiency Mark reached 88% in 1918. The inspector’s comments were always good, “fine personality, capable, influential, good methods, firm, kindly, excellent control” etc. She continued in this manner and in 1929 and 1930 was “motherly, dignified, Quiet, Thorough, fine influence, faithful, devoted, good average teacher”.
Ellen died on the 1 May 1944 aged 78 years old.
