View Park house is made of random rubble stone with brick quoins and surrounds. It has a raked return verandah on timber posts. The property was owned by William Jones, farmer. He owned about 225 acres in December 1864. Jones had worked at Lady Alice Mines and undertook small scale quarrying on his property. The stone was used for road metal. Jones took out three mortgages on his house in February 1865, January 1871 and Feb 1873 which may indicate that the house was built at these times.
The house is built over a dairy and the storage and processing of hams and bacon. The farm was used produced mixed farming.
William Jones arrived on the ship Isabella Watson in 1845, age 23.
The family moved to Angle Vale.
In January 1880, the property was purchased by Charles Anders Charlson, a farmer who owned it until his death in October 1918. Charles was born in Sweden. He married Irish born Jan Roe, in Undalya in 1859. They tried their luck at gold fossicking in the Barossa and later at the Lady Alice Gold Mine without much luck. Charles then moved into the timber cutting business, supplying lining for the shafts and tunnels of Lady Alice Mine. Jane was also an industrious lady, with her first savings she purchased a cow to provide milk for the family. Any surplus was sold to the miners. Over time they were able to purchase more cows, supplying milk to the gold fields. Jane also cooked meals for the miners.
Charles and Jan’s four children attended the Precolumb school which was close by.
The property has remained in the Charlson family since.
