Evan was born on the 15 January 1889 at Paskeville, South Australia. His father was John Clucas and his mother was Margaret Lewin. John was born in 1844 and Margaret was born on the 10 April 1843 at Marown, both in the Isle of Man, England. Margaret’s parents were Thomas Lewin and Elizabeth Killy. In 1881 Margaret was still single and a dressmaker on the Isle of Man. She married John Clucas on the 9 November 1881 at Marown. John already had a son Robert John Miller Clucas who was 10 years old.
They came to Adelaide in 1881, where a daughter was born ;
Amy Eleanor Mona was born in 1882 at North Adelaide.
John became a teacher and taught at Norwood in 1882 then on York Peninsula at Curramulka, Minlaton, Paskeville and at Warooka in 1892 when he resigned. During these years two more children were born;
John was born in 1883 at Curramulka.
Evan Lewin Beaumont was born on the 15 January 1889 at Paskeville.
The family then moved to Gawler where Margaret joined the Education department and taught at Uley, One Tree Hill from 1892 until 1913.
On July 15th 1913 a farewell social was given to Mr and Mrs Clucas at the One Tree Hill Institute Hall. Margaret having retired from 21 years of teaching at Uley owing to reaching the age limit. Margaret and John had gone work in the district – Mr Clucas having been a prominent worker for the Literary Society, Agricultural Bureau, Institute and council. He also worked as acting deputy Returning Officer. Many speeches were given and musical items rendered. Mr Clucas was given a purse of sovereigns from the residents of Smithfield and One Tree Hill. Margaret received a copper hot water kettle and stand from her scholars.
Evan enlisted on the 18 August 1915, aged 26 years old.
Evan remained at the Exhibition Camp in South Australia training. He went to Maribymong, Victoria and was placed in the BAC 23rd Howitzer Brigade. He became a Gunner.
Evan embarked at Melbourne, Victoria and disembarked at Plymouth, England on the 18 July 1916. He proceeded overseas on that date and was taken on the strength of the 3rd Division Artillery. He began fighting until he was admitted to hospital on the 23 April 1917 with a gun shot wound to his left leg. He was transferred to the 56th Casualty Clearing Station and then to the 5th General Hospital, Rouen, France. He was sent to England on the Hospital Ship West Australia and admitted to the 2nd Southern General Hospital, England. He was discharged from the 3rd Auxillary Hospital to furlough. He returned to France classified A3 and was a Q.M.S. He was given leave to Paris. He recommenced his duties until he was given leave to England. He returned on the 16 October 1918 and was permanently detached to the 1st F.A.B. after the war ended.
He returned to Australia on the Aeneas to Melbourne. He was discharged at Adelaide on the 29 August 1919. Evan received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
When Evan was 38 years old he married Mary Beatton Morris aged 30 years old on the 22 August 1927 at the residence of Mrs A. E. M. Harvey at Hamley Bridge. He did not live long after his marriage. He died on the 14 May 1934 while living at 43 Albion Avenue, Glandore, South Australia.
The Playford Council funded a $125,000 reserve next to the Town Hall on the main street of One Tree Hill. It was named the Clucas Green after one of the towns pioneering families. It was chosen after a community competition was held in 2007.
